I’ve been there too. I get all kinds of bent out of shape when people tell me that unfriending people for “just politics” is silly and petty. I’m Japanese American. I haven’t forgotten that “just politics” sent us to the US concentration camps, and if my family hadn’t been living in Hawaii at the time, my mother would have been born someplace like Heart Mountain, Topaz, Manzanar. So when that starts adding up, I find what I need to do is take a serious break from it. I still post (sites like Buffer will let you push content out without your actually visiting the sites) but I just step away from the madness for a day or two.
But I have another strategy just for Facebook: I follow sites that are purely happy-making. My two favorites are the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and UPS Dogs. Sheldrick fills my feed with sweet images of keepers hand-feeding baby elephants, and wonderful stories of the adult elephants who come back to show off their own babies. The UPS Dogs site is simply photos of UPS drivers and the assorted animals they meet on their routes, including the ones that wait around for the treats they know are coming. A little delight in a difficult world makes a lot of difference.
