If you’ve been looking for a job recently, you know how hard things are. There are fewer postings, and even if you find a role that you feel like you’re a shoo-in for, you may never even get a response.
How can you succeed in these difficult times? Over the next 3 weeks, I’ll share 3 key tips so you can navigate these challenges better.
Tip 1: Use job boards wisely.
Don’t spend all your time on one or two boards. You don’t have to stop using what you’re already familiar with, but try broadening your reach. Does your industry have any particular recruitment boards? (Google things like, What are the best sites to find HR jobs?) Are there special values or settings you’re seeking? (What are the best sites to find green jobs?) Are there local tools that might help you? (Where can job-seekers find help in Wisconsin?)
And don’t forget about your dream employers. If you’ve always wanted to work for King Arthur Baking (I’m projecting a little here), bookmark their “careers” page and check it every so often. You can also search “best places to work, Seattle” to get an idea of what others at a particular company think.
When you have a list of job boards that fit your needs, come up with a schedule for checking them. You don’t need to look daily, but try to find a way to pop in at least once a week. Jobs are currently not always going to stay up more than 5 business days, so checking in weekly will let you know if there’s something you don’t want to miss.
