Sometimes, the very worst possible thing happens. How can we get through when it does?
First of all, embrace what you’re feeling. Cry, scream, punch a pillow, stay in bed all day. Do what you need to do immediately. Trying to put on a happy face isn’t going to make you feel better in the long run, so be kind and gentle with yourself.
Check in with your loved ones. If you’re reeling, they probably are, too. Hold them close. Support each other.
Find things that bring you happiness, however fleeting. I am particularly fond of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
Step away from social media and the news. It doesn’t help our mental health even at the best of times.
And finally, when you’re ready, take action where you can. It may feel inconsequential at first, but actions always matter. Don’t give up, even when things feel hopeless. Fight for what you believe, furiously support those you love. Be as steadfast as you can.
The fight goes on.
