Have you ever been a finalist for a role and confidently awaited an offer, only to be told they “went with someone else”? It stinks! And if you were really thinking you’d get that offer, it can be devastating.
This is a big part of why I advise people to keep looking for jobs, no matter where they are in the process. I even keep an eye out now, and I’m self-employed so I can’t get fired or laid off.
The trick to it is to get excited about a role, put your effort into applying and interviewing, and then try really hard to move on. I have even visualized a bookshelf that I put the job on so that I could mentally jump back into the search.
The other benefit to this mindset is that you may wind up with a couple of offers at once, which you lets you play them off each other, or simply consider which is the better fit for your needs.
