Happy fall! This is a season of change and, at least to me, a great time for energy and renewal.
I get a definite boost of vigor and productivity when the weather starts to turn cool. I’m not sure if it’s the actual temperatures, the shorter days feeling more urgent, or my old training that summer is for relaxing and autumn is back to school, but I don’t suppose it really matters.
If you’re wired the same way, this might be a great time to start looking for a new job or a promotion at work.
Start by getting clear about yourself. Can you pinpoint the areas you’re starting to feel stagnant in your job? Are there things you used to enjoy that are now kind of boring? Make a note of these, since they can point you in the direction of what’s next.
Next, think about what interests you now. That could be a different department in your current job, or it could be something completely different. Either way, note that’s interesting and why. Then, start looking around so you can connect with people in similar roles. Again, this may be where you already work, or you may need to take a bit of a deep dive on LinkedIn. Connect with people without having an agenda beyond getting to know them and learning about what they do.
As you talk to people, narrow down your focus to a job title or a few target employers, and note how your skills could match or enhance what they do. Start adding these details to your resume, ideally with some detail to back them up.
When you feel good about you resume, let people know you’re ready for a change! Update your LinkedIn profile as appropriate. Talk to people about what’s next. Find things and apply for them. Brush up on your interviewing skills and get ready for the next chapter.
