Your work skills may be influencing you too much.
Have you been looking for work you can do based mostly on your skills? If so, you’ve run afoul of the Skill Trap! Skills are important, of course, and many of us are proud of having gained the ones we have, but your career search really shouldn’t start and stop there.
What else should you consider: Your values, your needs, and what you genuinely enjoy. I’ll go into values next week, since it’s the what I most often see that makes a “perfect” job into a miserable one. But your needs and what you enjoy are things you can identify yourself! I’ll include some tips next week on listing these.
But since we do need to have a conversation about skills, let’s start with the basics. What are some things you know you’re good at? Jot them down somewhere. For today, it doesn’t need to be work-related, so just list some things you are confident about. We’ll get into more detail tomorrow, but have a good think about this first set of skills so you have a good starting point.
